  1. Mount k2 (also known as Chhogori/Qogir, Ketu/Kechu ) is the second highest mountain on Earth with the height of 8611 meters which is 237 meters less than the highest peak Mount Everest(situated in Nepal).

  2. It is located in the Baltistan region of Gilgit–Baltistan, Pakistan and the Taxkorgan Tajik Autonomous County of Xinjiang, China.
  3. K2 is known as the “Awesome”, “Killer”,Savage Mountain” due to the extreme difficulty of ascent and the second-highest fatality rate among the eight thousanders(the 14 independent mountains on Earth that are more than 8,000 metres (26,247 ft) high above sea level).
  4. One in every four people who have attempted the summit has died trying.
  5. K2 remained unclimbed until 31 July 1954 when a successful expedition led by Italian explorer Ardito Desio reached the peak.
  6. It is basically climbed from the Pakistani side since it is more difficult and hazardous to reach the peak of K2 from the Chinese side.
  7. Despite many attempts Mount k2 has never been climbed in winter season and the best time to climb k2 is during the spring and autumn seasons.
  8. In 2008, eleven mountain climbers died. A sheet of ice slid down the mountain. Some hikers were crushed; others were swept off the mountain.
  9. The north side of the mountain is the steepest: there it rises over 3,200 metres (10,500 ft) above the K2 (Qogir) Glacier in only 3,000 metres (9,800 ft) of horizontal distance
  10. There is only one-third as much oxygen available to a climber on the summit of K2 as there is at sea level which causes altitude sickness.
  11. The mountain experiences extreme storms of several days’ duration, which have resulted in many of the deaths on the peak.
  12. Climbing K2 is much expensive, cost may vary but the normal price is around $ 50,000.
